Icon library update (coming soon-ish)

Published by about 17 hours ago.

An update to the icon library is planned to arrive in about a week. This one is focused partly on visual changes and partly on some under-the-hood cleanup that has been needed for a while.

Pages of individual icons will get a new design. The layout should feel more in line with the recent icon and cursor set pages and with the rest of the site in general. Links to the author's profile or donation pages will work the same way as they do on set pages.

On the technical side, icons now have hashes assigned to them. These are used to detect duplicates. Duplicate uploads are still allowed, but this should help reduce unnecessary storage use over time.

Some cleanup has already been done. Completely empty icons were removed from the library, and empty images inside uploaded icons were stripped. Going forward, this will be enforced automatically (empty icons will no longer be accepted, and if an icon contains empty images, those images will be removed during upload).

You may have noticed that recently uploaded icons have auto-generated descriptions (if the author did not write a description themselves). Descriptions will be over time added to also older icons and one of the reasons for this cleanup was also to save resources when creating these descriptions.

Authors will also be able to remove images from their uploaded icons, which should make it easier to fix mistakes without reuploading the whole set. And if everything goes as planned, there should also be a small bonus feature included in this update, more on this later.

A similar cleanup and set of improvements is planned for the cursor library as well: removing empty cursors, handling duplicates, and related changes.
